On the shores of the Western Cape coastline, Gansbaai (“Goose Bay”) forms part of the larger Walker Bay area (Cape Whale Coast Route). The popular activities and adventures in Gansbaai, South Africa (also known as Gansbay or Gans Bay) all capture the essence of this small town.
Gansbaai is home to the panoramic mountains surrounding the bay, endless sand beaches and crystal blue waters. The calm seas of summer see the South Right Whales moving close to the shore to mate and they calve in the late winter and spring, Gansbaai has much to offer that is unique to the area and the land-based whale watching opportunities are amongst the best in the world.
Gansbaai Attractions include the Great White Shark, the Southern Right Whale, African Penguins, Cape Fur Seals, over 100 different bird species, a 1000-year-old Milkwood Forest and the Fynbos (floral kingdom unique to the Western Cape.)
Gansbaai is situated in the Overberg region of the Western Cape of South Africa and offers some of the world's best boat and shore-based whale watching and unquestionably the world's best White Shark diving venue. Some of the Cape's best-conserved fynbos adorns the mountains in the area and numerous walks and trails criss-cross it. Visit the lighthouse at Danger Point, where you can climb the stairs to the revolving light and peer out at the restless waters that cover the remains of the famous Birkenhead wreck. The notorious Birkenhead Rock can be seen at low tide, just a few kilometres off Danger Point. Tours to the lighthouse and the Birkenhead Memorial can be arranged.
The caves along the cliffs of De Kelders allow visitors to Gansbaai to explore ancient secret wonders and the various mountain trails present awesome fynbos (over 1500 species), ancient Milkwood forests breath taking views.
